The Best Mornings Turn into Chaotic Days, But I Love It All the Same

My favorite type of mornings are when my 13 month old is star-fished on the bed next to me, sleeping soundly and I can sip on my hot coffee without interruption. My husband is out shoveling snow with our goofy, crazy dog as I am working on assignments with out little fingers adding random letters by pushing the buttons on my laptop. The house is as quiet as can be with only my heat whispering and the coffee pot humming. The sun hasn’t quite risen yet, so my salt lamp creates a deep orange hue in our room adding to the feeling of morning.
I know this time will not last long, I will get an hour alone at most before our chaotic little human arises to conquer the day. He’ll start by wiggling his fingers and toes, rolling from side to side fighting to stay asleep until he realizes that the “tap tap tap” sound is my words on to my computer screen. He will then sit up and look at me with sleepy eyes and a devilish grin! It's time for Marimpsy’s shanagins to begin. Luckily he hears Daddy stomp his shoes off on the porch as our dog Cronos comes bounding in, running straight for our quiet room to join in on Marimpsy’s games. Forgetting about my laptop, he calls out “Doggy!” ignoring morning greetings and kisses from Mommy and Daddy as he climbs off the bed and the two of them, a boy and his dog, run off to the room where the dog food and water belong.

A big SPLASH is heard with a CRASH and a giggle, Marimpsy the destroyer has begun his escapade. Even though this happens every morning, I always forget that Marimpsy loves the squishy, soggy food between his fingers and toes. Not even a break for breakfast, he snacks as he destroys, taking little yogurt bites out of his go-bag and dumping them all over the rug in the next room. “Ooh, look how they fit so well in between the strands of yarn in the rug” I imagine him thinking as I clean soggy food and water from the floor while Daddy is cooking us a delicious breakfast. Soon there are toys all over the house and crumbs in the oddest of places; luckily that is where Cronos comes in and why he follows our destroyer around the house.
As hard as it is to continue to clean around and behind our little monster, I know just as fast as the infant season passed, this too will fly in the blink of an eye. So for now, we destroy together and “attempt” to clean together focusing on the fun together rather than on perfection because honestly, they grow too fast and there isn’t enough time in the day to stress about it.

Plus, it is a lot of fun remembering what it is like to be one and watching this boy and his dog in the little life that my husband and I created. So during this chaotic season of toddlerhood, I will continue to enjoy my hour long coffee break in the mornings before Marimpsy wakes.
